Mesopelagic zone (twighlight zone)

The mesopelagic zone is the zone that spans from 700 feet to 3,300 feet. The mesopelagic zone has little light near the epipelagic zone, and no light at the bottom of the zone. Due to the little amount of light, the mesopelagic zone's temperatures vary from 39 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit. There is not enough light in the mesopelagic zone for photosynthesis to occur, so many of the creatures in this zone are visiting from different zones, usually feeding on dead organisms or organisms that are feeding on the dead organisms.
Swordfish are fish that are often found in the mesopelagic zone. Swordfish belong to the animilia kingdom, the chordata phylum, and the xiphias genus. Swordfish like to live in colder waters, so they will often travel into the mesopelagic zone for the temperature. Swordfish can also eat some of the smaller scavenger fish in the mesopelagic zone and also feeds in the epipelagic zone. Swordfish can thrive in the mesopelagic zone due to their tolerance for low temperatures and the scavenger fish that they can feed on. Contrary to popular belief, swordfish do not use their sword-like protrusion from their front to spear other fish, but instead to slash them in order to injure them and make them easier to catch.
